Role title: Homeless Families Advocacy Role
Contract type: Fixed-term or permanent, full time with part time considered.
Location: Office based in Oldham, Greater Manchester with travel around the UK.
Start date: June 2024.
Salary: £28-30k depending on experience

Background
Shared Health Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which is passionate
about finding solutions so that the impact of poverty on health is reduced. We
are absolutely committed to raising awareness and bringing change for the
experience of families who are homeless. We have pioneered work to identify
families, understand the situation at local and national level through lived
experience and research. We now bringing solutions forward. We are based in
Oldham in Greater Manchester and would love to have someone join our team
who will actively engage with MPs, Peers and Local Authorities in the lead up to
the general election.
This role working together with our CEO and policy lead will be significant in
building consensus across the political spectrum alongside networking with
other organisations who are interested in this area building a coalition and
network.


The person

A keen interest in UK politics and current affairs.
An effective networker who can engage a diverse range of people both digital
and face to face understanding that relationships are key.
Knowledge and understanding of how policy gets implemented in National
government.
Experience of engaging MPs, Peers, civil servants
A team player with initiative and a positive “can do” attitude and a self-starter.
An effective communicator, both written and verbal, with a specific ability to
communicate well with colleagues and explain complex information simply to
internal and external audiences.
Have excellent presentation skills and the ability to present to a wide variety of
audiences, tailoring messages according to the audience.
Have an ability to bring people together from different backgrounds and
sectors to build connections and establishing effective working relationships.
A commitment to excellence and high standards of professionalism.

Main responsibilities
Developing a creative approach to policy influence and wider advocacy.
Supporting organisational initiatives to embed organisational agenda in the
mainstream policy dialogue, build support from PPCs and MPs for our
proposals, and sustain public interest in this policy area.
Managing working relationships with external partners and other key
stakeholders, particularly with parliamentarians and other policy stakeholders.
Researching and analysing qualitative/statistical information, including primary
sources and government data sources/other third-party data.
Drafting policy reports, briefing notes, internal memos, presentations, emails to
external parties.
Helping to develop/disseminate evidence-based public policy solutions to
support programme goals.
Other duties that may arise from time to time.


Personal specification
Experience

Essential
– Engaging MPs, Peers and Civil Servants to get policy implemented.
– Working with people from a variety of backgrounds and forging strong
relationships.
– Public speaking and presentation experience.

Desirable
– Worked within the VCSE sector previously.
– Experience of the impacts of health inequalities.


Qualifications

Desirable
– Politics related qualification either A-level or degree standard.


Skills and Knowledge

Essential
– Understanding of UK politics and current affairs.
– Knowing how to influence decision makers within UK Government.

Desirable
– An understanding of the housing process for families in the UK.
– An understanding of the impact of homelessness on children and adults.
